If you have never seen a giga yacht with an upside down bow, go to Portofino right away and you will be able to see the Olivia O, the first luxury yacht designed and built by the Norwegian shipyard Ulstein Verft.

The particular shape of this nearly 90 metre long giga yacht, named the X-BOW® is a trademark of the Norwegian shipyard, which generally make it for cargo ships, fishing vessels, ferries and working vessels, because it guarantees that the vessel can work in weather conditions which for other types of hulls would be impossible.

The  ULSTEIN X-BOW® design, with the upside down bow, has redefined naval engineering. When it was launched in 2005, it received immediate interest from owners and companies and currently there are over 100 vessels with this characteristic either being built or working all around the world.

The X-BOW is capable of distributing stress in a more uniform manner over its surface, allowing the vessel to remain more stable in adverse weather conditions, increasing the comfort both for passengers and crew. The X-BOW® is ideal for navigating in difficult sea conditions: in rough seas the pitching is reduced, as are the vibrations.  In addition, by reducing hydrodynamic resistance, the amount of fuel required is reduced, just like the spray on the deck.

The owner of the Olivia O, the billionaire Eyal Ofer, having a background in maritime transport and knowing the characteristics of the Norwegian shipyard, chose it for the construction of his giga yacht. Aiding in the design were also the famous designers Espen Øino and Ulstein.

Olivia O was launched in 2018, it is 88.5 metres long and has a speed of 16.6 knots. With its 8 cabins it can host up to 20 people, who can entertain themselves with a spa, a cinema, a gym and a 10 metre pool. Crew quarters can hold 30 people. When the yacht is in more remote areas, this is not a problem, it can easily be reached by helicopter thanks to its heliport.
