A vessel caught fire during refuelling operations and damaged the hull of a 57 metre megayacht docked only a short distance away, which had just finished undergoing a refit. The mishap took place at the Bahia Mar Marina in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The vessel that caught fire was an 8.5 metre boat. According to investigators, the fire started in the boat’s engine room, while it was anchored near the 56.7 metre superyacht, W, built by the Dutch shipyard, Feadship in 2013, causing damages to the yacht’s hull.

Twenty fire fighters from the Fort Lauderdale fire department were called to the scene, putting out the fire and securing the two vessels. No injuries were reported, but the damages appear to be costly. The superyacht, W, had recently completed a 10 month-long refit, in the Feadship shipyard, and had just been delivered to its owner after being tested in the North Sea.

After the refit, W now has a new metallic silver hull, giving a modern and contemporary touch to a classic Feadship model. Modifications began in the yacht’s interior: the Feadship shipyard transformed the four cabin layout into a 6 cabin one, in order to add another four passengers.

The original interior, designed by Banneberg & Rowell is otherwise unchanged. The wheelhouse was modernised and both MTU engines were inspected, while a new waste water treatment system was installed. Two halogen lights were replaced with energy efficient LED ones. The flames caused particular damage to the starboard loof, the part of the hull that was closest to the fire.
