An accident has occurred in the archipelago of the Aland Islands in Finland. The Viking Grace, a ferry belonging to the sailing company, Viking Line was stranded because of strong winds, which pushed it towards the coast during a severe storm. The accident was filmed on the phones of a number of people who had gathered along the coastline where the ferry was stranded. The ship had departed from Mariehamn and was en route to Turku.

At the time it was stranded, there were 331 passengers on board and 98 crew members, but there were no injuries. All the people on board spent the night on the ship, while divers worked to check the condition of the hull.

The ship was then able to carry on, thanks to authorisation given by the local authorities and by Lloyd’s Register, who deemed that the ship was in a good enough condition to continue on to Turku, where the passengers were disembarked and where the Viking Grace was taken to a shipyard for repairs.

The Viking Grace is a symbol of environmental sustainability. In addition to being fuelled by LNG (Liquid Natural Gas), in the last two years it has been equipped with a sail using a Norsepower rotor, to further reduce fuel consumption and, therefore, emissions harmful to the environment.
