Welcome back to another episode of Daily Nautica’s podcast, “Giro di Boa” In the fourth episode we are interviewing designer, Luca Dini, who, since 1997, along with his studio, has designed 85 superyachts with another 17 under construction.
As a child, Luca Dini dreamed of becoming a sports journalist, then he was inspired: “It was 1983 – he remembers – at that time my family were living in Livorno and it was there that the biggest yacht of the time, Kashoggi’s Nabila, was moored for repairs. It cast its shadow over half the boardwalk. It was right near the port, where I passed by on my way to school. I stood there looking at this boat for a few hours, it was like something out of science fiction. When I saw it I felt jealous of the person who had thought to make that object. And that started a little niggle in my head.”
LUCA DINI: A PROFESSIONAL WITH HIS HEAD ON HIS SHOULDERS
Even though he is an internationally recognised and well known designer, Luca Dini is a well-grounded professional. A photograph on his desk reminds him of his roots.
“I didn’t have a sponsor – he explains – and I lost my father when I was 17. I never graduated from university, I couldn’t because I had to support my family. When I decided to open my own practice, I did it in my bedroom, in my mother’s house, and she was my secretary. I had a nice car, I sold it and bought a Twingo to travel around the shipyards. I have a picture on my desk of my drawing table with my brother’s bed behind it, because I never want to forget.”
Designed by Luca Dini, the m/y Sea Force One is a 54 metre concept yacht.
“I sold my car – says the designer – because I didn’t have the money to buy a drawing table. I went around with no air conditioning and drove where I had to go. I might have been particularly lucky, but I was nobody, I had no money, no sponsor, and I worked hard. Now there are 60 people in the studio.”
Luca Dini: his favourite yacht
The first yacht to take the heart of the famous designer is the Sea Force One, a 54 metre Admiral, filled with original art made by 15 international artists chosen to work directly on the vessel. “The art was painted – reveals Dini – directly on the yacht. It was created for a young Italian owner, and we worked together on it. It was the first yacht with a modern art exhibition on board.”
