History of Arma di Taggia

According to local sources, the primitive human settlements occurred during the Pre-Roman period. The oldest mention of the town goes back to between the X and VII century BC, thanks to the discovery of funerary tombs on the above Monte Grange, where a Ligurian battlement was built, used as a commercial emporium, open to imports from all around the Mediterranean. The village was destroyed and abandoned most likely during the Langobardic invasion, which also led to the deterioration of  San Giorgio. From then, the inhabitants of the area began to populate a new settlement, at the base of a hill approximately 3km from the sea, which, starting from the late X century, was known with the name Tabia. Taggia and its magistrates became trusted allies of the Republic of Genoa, following, therefore its historical events until it was suppressed in 1797, as well as during the short-lived Ligurian Republic. With Napoleone Bonaparte it was annexed to the French Empire. It became a part of the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1815 and following that the Kingdom of Italy in 1861.
