A new record for Lusben shipyard one of the top refit and service centres for super yachts in the northern Mediterranean. The company presented their new inspection pit for sailing yachts the other day in Livorno.

With its 12 metre length, 8.5 metre depth and 3.5 metre width, this structure is the largest inspection pit in the Mediterranean to date. The large size of the new pit accommodates scheduled maintenance, varnishing and direct work on the keel for sailing yachts up to 70 metres, even with centerboards. In addition, with the two cement modules covering it, the pit can also be used for traditional refitting works on motor boats.

We talked about this with Alessandro Centelli, site director for Lusben’s Livorno site.

THIS PIT IS ONLY A PART OF THE LARGER INVESTMENT FOR THE LIVORNO SHIPYARD. CAN YOU TELL US SOMETHING MORE?

“Over the last two years, and for the next two, the company plans to invest in the yard. At the moment we have reached 50% of the planned investment and this has covered the entire area in front of the floating basin and piers. We will then be adding a building for services for vessels and companies working in refit, and lastly, we will have the offices for Lusben employees.”

WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT THIS PIT. WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT?

“The pit that we have made is the only one of this size in the Mediterranean. This makes us unique. Often on sail boats, you need to open the daggerboard, take it apart to access the equipment inside, and now we can do this too,”

WHAT DO YOUR CLIENTS THINK ABOUT THIS?

“I have been contacted by sailing yacht managers and captains who found out we were building this structure. It is spreading through word of mouth.”

In order to manage to new pit for sailing yachts, Lusben are planning to add new, highly qualified professional roles, in order to further expand their team of experts allowing them to offer more services in the yacht refitting sector.
