Grimaldi ships take another step forward in lowering CO2 emissions. The latest generation of GG5G (Grimaldi Green 5th Generation) class RORO ships, built for Gruppo Grimaldi, has an emission reduction performance seven times lower than the previous generations, according to an in-depth study validated by RINA, regarding the calculation of energy efficiency indexes for RORO ships belonging to different classes.

The assessment evaluated CO2 emissions in kilograms per distance (miles) and load capacity (trailer). Data collection was carried out on specific RORO ships and on individual representative units of entire classes, including, AyshaEurocargo TriesteEurocargo Valencia, Eurocargo Palermo (Hyundai class) and the most recent Eco Livorno (GG5G class).

RINA and Gruppo Grimaldi continue to validate and explore innovative solutions to reduce emissions, during the energy transition period that the shipping industry is undergoing. According to IMO objectives, the target is to reduce overall yearly emissions of greenhouse gases produced by maritime transport by at least 50% by 2050, compared to 2008 levels.

In particular, with the recent launch of the Eco Valencia, Eco Barcelona, Eco Livorno and Eco Savona, the first four hybrid RORO ships out of the 12 units commissioned to the Chinese shipyard Jinling, Gruppo Grimaldi highlights their continuing efforts in investing in innovative technological solutions, including the use of mega batteries installed on board and activated during berthing, the Air Lubrication System (ALS) device to reduce friction on the hull, solar panels, the intelligent management of peaks in energy consumption, and Waste Heat Recovery.

The analysis carried out for Gruppo Grimaldi – noted Giosué Vezzuto, Executive Vice President for Marine RINA – is fundamental to ensure that the company has continuous control over the energy performance of its fleet. The objective is not only to ensure compliance with current international regulations, but also to progressively achieve more environmentally sustainable parameters. Contributing, therefore, to decarbonization and reducing emissions, so as to achieve the ambitious targets set by ESG, which both RINA and Gruppo Grimaldi have been investing in for some time.

We are particularly satisfied – added the Chief Executive Officer of the Neapolitan group, Emanuele Grimaldiof the validation carried out by RINA because it proves the effectiveness of our decision to invest in this new generation of RORO ships. This confirms that GG5G class ships, in addition to being the largest short distance RORO transport ships in the world, are also much more environmentally sustainable.
