The Cannes Yachting Festival 2025 was host to the world debut of the Sanlorenzo SX120, the first composite yacht of this size to be equipped with the new Volvo Penta IPS Professional Platform. On board this splendid vessel, Daily Nautica interviewed Nicola Pomi, vice-president of Volvo Penta Marine Sales, who shared with us the secrets of a system destined to change the way we enjoy the water.
“This is the first yacht – explains Nicola Pomi to DN – to be equipped with the IPS Platform. This is the evolution of the IPS system which was very successful, reaching the IPS30, meaning 2000 horsepower. The new professional platform represents a revolution for yachts and superyachts: it is still an IPS pod, but with two power inputs. Each leg can have two motors, currently thermal like in the case of the SX120, but in the future they could be hybrid or full electric.”
Silence, comfort and manoeuvrability
The platform has been designed to improve every aspect of the seafaring experience, from energy efficiency to acoustic comfort. “What this system brings on board – notes the vice-president of Volvo Penta Marine Sales – is the complete absence of sound and vibrations, reduced consumption and a surprising manoeuvrability. For owners and for the crew, this means navigating in a completely new way, more fluid and more sustainable.”
But innovation doesn’t stop at propulsion. The system integrates advanced functions like dynamic positioning, assisted docking and 24-hour real time connectivity, elements that provide safety and simplify yacht management up to 60 metres.
A simple philosophy
When asked whether Volvo Penta is working on other solution to make a captain’s job easier, Pomi responds without hesitation: “The system philosophy is to simplify the management of complex vessels. Even 35-40 metre yachts, like the SX120 can be controlled more easily. Our objective is to give the crew and the owner a better experience: fewer vibrations, less noise and intuitive control. Making something complex into something simple is in our DNA.”
Technology for the future
The Volvo Penta IPS Professional Platform is also a step forward in terms of sustainability. Thanks to the Eco Mode function, the system dynamically manages switching the motors on and off based on the power required, optimising consumption and reducing wear and tear.
“We are proud – concludes Pomi – to present this technology on board a Sanlorenzo yacht. It is an important step, not just for us, but for the entire boating industry.” With this platform we are paving the way for a future where electric and hybrid become an increasingly integral part of marine propulsion.
