SEA.AI, one of the most fascinating innovations presented during the Cannes Yachting Festival 2025, attracted the attention of owners and professionals for its revolutionary approach to safety at sea, Daily Nautica met with Solenn Gouerou, Head of Marketing & Communications for the Austrian company, to find out more about how their system works, as it changes navigation thanks to artificial intelligence.
“We use AI – explains Gouerou – to identify floating objects and we have a number of different systems that adapt to the different types of vessel. We have simple, fixed models, but also rotating 360° systems that can trace a full perimeter around the vessel.”
A system created to prevent accidents and save lives.
The heart of the SEA.AI system is a combination of thermal and low light cameras that generate a digital image of the surrounding seascape. Through the use of algorithms, the AI can identify, classify and monitor any floating obstacles, from containers to rafts, including objects that cannot be identified using radar, like a person in the water.
“It is truly important for us – notes the Head of Marketing & Communications – to help rescue people through tracking. The system follows the person in the water, and sends an alarm to the crew, who can receive it via tablet, iOS or Android.”
The system analyses the area below the hprizon pixel by pixel, identifying every object on the surface, and, depending on the threat level, the interface will display coloured signals: blue for no danger, yellow for be careful and red for imminent collision risk.
Visual technology that supersedes the human eye
SEA.AI promises to see better than the human eye even in adverse conditions. It works day and night autonomously and does not require an internet connection to work. Each unit is equipped with image stabilisation, and can register temperature changes of up to 0.05°C.
“Our AI – shares Gouerou with DN – has been training since 2018. We have collected data from many of our users to make the system even more intelligent and each update improves its identification and object classification.” The objective? To help the crew be aware in every situation, providing a clear and concise representation of the water surrounding the yacht.
An intuitive design for improved safety
The interface is intuitive and modular: users can change from day-time camera to thermal with a touch, choose alarm parameters and use the SEA.AI app on any multifunctional display, on-board computer or mobile device. Thanks to integrated augmented reality, users can select from three different modes: thermal, low-light and map. “We want the user – note the Head of Marketing & Communication of the Austrian company – to immediately understand what is happening, without needing to interpret complex data.”
