Yet another pirate attack in the waters of the Gulf of Guinea. The story was shared by the captain of another ship, on board as a passenger, who filmed what was happening on a merchant ship on his phone. The crew was Russian.
The images, published on the YouTube channel run by Mikhail Voytenko, show all the phases of the conflict. The ship had armed security on board, apparently Nigerian nationals, who reacted to the attack from the pirates, who, after a few minutes decided to give up and leave, also because, as reported by one of the crew members, one of the pirates was wounded.
The video, shared by the magazine Maritime Bulletin, shows the captain making an announcement on the intercom, ordering the crew to stay away from the gunwales, window and portholes on the starboard side. On the bridge, one of the security officers fires some shots towards the pirates, while another officer, on the deck below, is armed with a large calibre machine gun.
The pirates respond to the fire (shells are found on deck later on), but give up on the assault after a few minutes, making their escape. In the video, one of the crew members claims they saw one of the pirates injured by a bullet.
