Awake is the new sailing yacht design by the Mostes shipyard. In 72 feet , it encompasses the pleasure of sailing and the comfort of a motor boat. The design includes a Racer and Fast Cruiser version. At the moment, Awake is still in the design phase, waiting for its first commission, but it is full of innovative elements.
AWAKE, THE INNOVATIVE MOSTES DESIGN
The objective of the design is to build a boat that has all the characteristics that are currently not present in a sail boat of this size, 22 metres. The idea is to make it so the owner can combine the pleasure of a fast race with the comfort of a motor boat. This is the point from which the entire design has been developed.
A characteristic of all sail boats is the presence of stanchions, which, in this vessel, have been replaced by an impressive raised gunwale, which, while keeping the boat drier during sailing, also offers a safe and comfortable passage.
Normally, sail boats of this size are equipped with a single central cockpit, creating an obstacle for entry to the deckhouse. Instead, Mostes has decided to double the space and increase comfort, by creating a second cockpit, to be used as a large sun room, giving passengers the opportunity to enjoy the outside spaces on the boat, even when the main cockpit is occupied. Access to the living area is guaranteed by a solid bannister, a necessity during sailing.
Another aspect that makes this vessel different from all the others is its internal liveability, at sea level. There is only a small step to access the living area, with the owner’s cabin and common areas, like the dinette and galley, which are at the same level as the external cockpit.
PROPELLORS AND ANCHORS DISAPPEAR INTO THE HULL
Another singular aspect of this boat is its maximum speed of 18 knots (cruising speed, 16 knots), which drastically reduces transfer times. In order to do this, in addition to studying the shape of the hull, in order to maximise efficiency, propulsion is through a retractable twin stern drive. The fins are lowered during engine navigation and inclined until they retract into the hull while sailing, so as not to create friction on the hull.
Awake is also equipped with an underwater anchoring system, including an anchor with a moulded base in order to perfectly adapt to the shape of the hull. While the anchor is being raised, the integrated rotating mechanism will always place the anchor in the correct position.
A SAILING YACHT
The essential sail plan, the aluminium hull, the boom with roller furling, and the self-taking roller furling system, make Awake a highly performing sail boat, guaranteeing at the same time, a level of comfort difficult to compare. The mast and boom will be built in carbon fibre.
The pleasure of sailing comes together perfectly with the practicality of its execution. Among the main comforts of a motor boat is the option of navigating it from the inside. For this reason, Mostes has planned an interior wheelhouse, with ample visibility and equipped with all the necessary instruments. A solution that will be even more appreciated in case of a sudden change in weather conditions or a malfunction in the wheel.
IT IS ALSO A MOTOR BOAT
The engine room with be soundproofed through the use of a number of panel layers. The boat will be equipped with two Volvo D3-140Hp engines, with stern drives, installed to create a dual configuration: for sailing and for motor navigation. The propeller configuration allows the stern drives to retract into the hull. The engine command will be near the starboard wheelhouse as well as the internal wheel.
AWAKE’S INTERIORS
The main deck includes an ample dinette, owner cabin and console. The living room is off the dining area with table and chairs as is the relaxation area with sofas and table, from where the galley is accessed. The kitchen is long and equipped with all appliances (double fridge, oven, dishwasher and hob). The owner cabin has a large window overlooking the water.
The lower deck can be described as the “night area”. On the main deck there is a VIP cabin including a double bed, private bathroom, office space and to the left, another cabin with bunk beds and private bathroom. Instead, to the bow is the second owner cabin, a large space with private bathroom.
FOR MOSTES, THE PLEASURE OF SAILING COMBINES WITH PRACTICALITY
“The fundamental concept at the basis of this design – explains Elena Lappon, owner of the Mostes shipyard, to Liguria Nautica – is to combine the pleasure of sailing on a fast sail boat with some of the comforts found on a motor boat. So we focused above all on the canoe body, designing the waterlines to allow the boat to reach a certain speed, and this is the main characteristic that makes this boat unique.”
But the design is full of innovation. “We then dedicated ourselves to other details – adds Elena Lappon – in the spirit of increasing comfort and convenience on board: from the dual wheelhouse, allowing for easy access to the dinette, to substituting runners and stanchions with a raised gunwale, placing the owner cabin on the same level of the main deck and the large windows overlooking the sea, as well as the interior wheel and the retractable stern drive. A boat where the pleasure of sailing comes together perfectly with the practicality of its execution”.
