Boating season never ends: yachts departing from Genova for warmer waters

Even when, in Italy, the colder days are setting in and marinas begin to empty, boating keeps on going and never stops. The boating season never ends, it simply moves. Over the past few days, from the port of Genova, a number of yachts and superyachts are being loaded onto huge cargo ships to be transported to warmer destinations around the planer, from the Caribbean to the Middle East, the United States and Far East. Comings and goings that show another side of boating: international logistics, seasonal transfers and an economy centred on the sea all year round.
The two sides of boat transfers
As boating expert Andrea Scolari explains to DN, there are two different kinds of movement: “On the one hand there are pleasure boats used for charter which spend the summer season in Europe and then are transferred to the Caribbean for the winter. This is a consolidated area of business. On the other hand, there are the new ships, built in Italy, that are being shipped to foreign dealers: in the Middle East, the Far East, or America.”
This is a global transport network that works with hundreds of units a year. On average, between 400 and 550 medium and large yachts are exported every year, moving a highly specialised sector that is continuously evolving.
Players in yacht transportation
Behind all this movement are companies that represent the logistic excellence of the international boating segment like Cigisped, Peters & May, Sevenstar Yacht Transport and Dockwise Yacht Transport part of the Spliethoff group. Operators that have made safety and technical precision their expertise. Cigispeed, for example, manages the entire process: from collecting the yacht to inspection, loading and travel. Each transfer is monitored carefully and is assisted in all ports around the world.
Peters & May, with over 50 years’ experience and offices in Europe, America and Asia, is among the world leaders in the transport of racing yachts and superyachts, providing bespoke solutions and a capillary network for international transport. Sevenstar Yacht Transport, with its DYT semi-submersible carriers, it uses the float-on/float-off system, considered to be the safest and most innovative method for transporting large yachts, up to and over 70 metres.
From the Molo Vecchio in Genova to the tropics
Over these past weeks in Genova, we have seen a number of cranes, technicians and operators. “Over these past few days – explains Scolari – they have been loading a 44 metre vessel with two tenders, a 95-foot Riva and other large units. The sizes vary, as does their use, some boats are private, others are used for charter. But the flow is constant, they come and go all year round.” In short, the sea has no seasons, and boating follows global routes.
